The goal of this lecture is to briefly review the evolution of Computer Aided Design field and the development of Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools used by semiconductor companies and EDA vendors. It will cover a 30-year period from early 1980s to about 2012 with some historical notes on earlier background theories and mathematical models.
We will discuss the origins and the development of CAD algorithms, stress the importance of mathematical models used, review design representations, and briefly review the state-of the art academic and industrial EDA tools today. This lecture will focus on physical design (including routing and placement algorithms) and on logic synthesis (two-level PLA optimization and multi-level synthesis with standard cells).
