In cooperation with Stanford University, our faculty is organizing an intensive 14-day summer programming course from 9 to 20 July. The course called Introduction to Computer Science is the only event of its kind in Europe and is intended for high school students. The aim is to arouse students interest in programming and teach them the basics in a fun way. Teaching will take place at our faculty and will be led by professors and student lecturers from Stanford University and FIT. The course will be in English. Course participants pay only a registration fee of CZK 500. You can also follow the course on social media under the hashtag #icsfit.

The course is intended primarily for complete programming beginners, but those who already have some experience with programming will not be bored. The organizer pays the costs of the course, e.g. meals, accommodation of non-Prague participants, weekend program. Course participants will only pay a registration fee of CZK 500, only after the admission decision to the course.

About the course

Course participants will have a unique opportunity to learn what an introductory computer science course looks like at one of the world’s best universities – Stanford University. Together with FIT teachers and students, professors and student lecturers from this university will take the participants through the course. Thanks to sophisticated teaching materials and assigned tasks, teaching takes the form of a fun game in which participants easily move forward.

The course content corresponds to the first four weeks of the highly successful CS106A course at Stanford University. Thanks to this course, approximately 1,600 students will learn the basics of programming each year. It results from 20 years of interaction between dozens of teachers and more than 10,000 of its graduates. Many other universities use it.

Discussed topics are programming language Karel and introduction to programming in Java. Emphasis will be placed on the use of graphic elements in Java. Demonstrations of programming using a graphics library will lead to a demonstration of the implementation of the game “Breakout”.

Program

The summer course at FIT takes the form of daily joint lectures. These are followed by the continuous solution of assigned programming tasks in computer laboratories and discussions in small groups of a maximum of 10 people. During the second week, participants focus on the implementation of the selected final project.

Each group is accompanied by a so-called Section Leader, which also helps participants with the final project. Leaders are FIT or Stanford University students who are close in age to the participants. The possibility of such an individual approach within small groups and mutual communication (in English and Czech) creates a relaxed, positive atmosphere.
