The Faculty of Information Technology of the Czech Technical University in Prague (FIT CTU) organized a ten-day professional internship for students from secondary technical schools from May 19 to 30, 2025. The aim of the internship was to introduce high school students to the world of information technology, to demonstrate how theory can be connected with practice, and to show that studying IT does not only mean programming—it can be applied in virtually any field.
The internship was prepared by the Department of Digital Design at FIT CTU under the leadership of Prof. Ing. Hana Kubátová, CSc. This year, a total of 43 students from 5 secondary technical schools took part: SPŠE Ječná, SPŠEaG V Úžlabině, SPŠST Panská, SPŠ and VOŠ Kladno, and SPŠE and VOŠ Pardubice.
The program included both theoretical lectures and practical exercises based on bachelor’s courses taught at FIT CTU, especially courses from the Computer Engineering specialization. These included Computer Structures and Architectures, Technological Foundations of Computers, Security and Technical Devices, 3D Printing, Machine Vision and Image Processing in the Image Processing Laboratory, Programming for Arduino, Interactive Applications in the Network Vizualization Laboratory, and Fundamentals of Intelligent Embedded Systems in the Laboratory of Intelligent Embedded Systems. As part of the internship, participants also visited the National Library of Technology, and students from SPŠ and VOŠ Kladno took a field trip to Siemens.
“We introduced the students to the basics of microcontroller programming, demonstrated how the software Mathematica works and how to perform complex calculations in it, such as for the nodal voltage method. Our colleagues also presented the basics of 3D printing, hardware security, and image processing. We always tried to make it as interesting as possible,” says Tomáš Přeučil, MSc., one of the internship instructors.
“The internship for high school students has been a tradition at our faculty for several years, and we are pleased to see growing interest every year. Students get a unique chance to experience what studying at FIT CTU is like and what they can learn here. Many of them see our instructors as approachable individuals who can explain even complex topics clearly and patiently,” says Assoc. Prof. Kateřina Hyniová from the Department of Digital Design at FIT CTU.
At the end of the internship, Prof. Hana Kubátová, head of the Department of Digital Design at FIT CTU, presented certificates of completion to the students, and the top three students from each participating school received material prizes. The winner of the inter-school competition held as part of the internship at FIT CTU was SPŠ and VOŠ Kladno. In the individual competition, the winner was Lukáš Knejzlík from SPŠE Ječná.
