Ing. David Bernhauer, Ph.D., from FIT CTU, received the Josef Hlávka Award, which is awarded to talented students who have demonstrated exceptional abilities and creative thinking in their field. He received the award both for his dissertation, Similarity Search in Unstructured Data using Data-Transitive Models, and for his pedagogical and popular science activities. He received his diploma on 16 November 2023 at the castle in Lužany.
David Bernhauer was among the 54 best-awarded students and graduates of Prague universities, the Brno University of Technology and young Czech Academy of Sciences scientists. He completed his PhD studies and is currently a Department of Software Engineering member. He won the award for his dissertation, Similarity Search in Unstructured Data using Data-Transitive Models, and also for his pedagogical and popular science activities, where he tries to pass on his knowledge to younger students and motivate them in their work.
“Connecting science and practice is what motivates me in my similarity search research. Similar search applications are encountered at every step today, from image search and duplicate detection to recommender systems. But science cannot work without knowledge handing over, so I try to take a personalized approach in my teaching. However, I see the biggest challenge as explaining how a researched principle can be applied in a given field of study so that I can motivate other students.”
The “Josef, Marie and Zdeňka Hlávkas Talent” Foundation Award is intended for talented students up to the age of 33 who have demonstrated exceptional abilities and creative thinking in their field. The laureates receive a foundation contribution of CZK 30,000 with the award. The proposal for the award is sent to the Foundation’s Board of Directors by the rectors of the Czech universities in Prague and the Brno University of Technology.
