The Faculty of Information Technology of CTU in Prague (FIT CTU) offers 400 study courses, a choice of 20 bachelor's and master's specializations, and has built more than 20 laboratories and 13 research groups. FIT CTU has educated over 4500 graduates and provides studies in all areas of information technology in the most modern equipped classrooms. FIT CTU has just celebrated its 15th anniversary since its establishment on 1st July 2009, when it became an essential part of CTU. The new faculty founding aimed to provide quality education in all areas of computer science and at all levels of study. In just 15 years, it has become the most desirable faculty of CTU.
From the beginning, there was a faculty vision dedicated to the study of information technology and educating top experts in this field who would be leaders in the job market. The idea of a new faculty also came due to the rapid development of this field and the growing demand for IT professionals. Within a very short time, it was possible to build a leading educational and research institution offering 10 bachelor's and 10 master's specializations and a doctoral programme, all in Czech and most of them also in English. Students can travel to more than 60 universities around the world and work on real projects with more than 58 partner companies while studying. At that time, the founders of the faculty certainly did not expect that every year more than 3400 applicants would apply to study at the faculty, which makes FIT CTU the most in-demand faculty of the entire CTU and it shows the importance and indispensability of this field today.
"I am proud that today FIT CTU is one of the most prestigious faculties of its kind in the Czech Republic. Our graduates and students are in demand from leading technology companies and startups worldwide. We owe this to the fifteen years of daily work of all faculty members. To continue to educate excellent IT professionals in the rapidly changing world of technology, we are continually investing in upgrading our teaching and research facilities. We are expanding study programmes and specializations to reflect the latest trends and needs of the job market. We are enhancing collaboration with industry and trying to stay on top of technological research. We plan further development of interdisciplinary projects in the future and continuous improvement of the educational process and innovation support in the field of IT," says Assoc. RNDr. Ing. Marcel Jiřina, Ph.D., Dean of FIT CTU.
In cooperation with other faculties of CTU, the faculty is preparing a new Master's degree programme in Quantum Informatics from the academic year 2025/2026 focused on the latest trends in informatics. New laboratories for quantum communication and cryptography and quantum computing will also be opened. Furthermore, FIT CTU is preparing a new study specialization focusing on computer graphics, vision, and games within the upcoming Master's degree programme in Applied Computer Science, which will build on the highly successful specialization in the Bachelor's degree programme. Another new Master's degree programme Computer Science Teaching, which will prepare graduates for professional teaching of computer science in secondary schools, is being prepared by FIT CTU with the Masaryk Institute of Higher Studies of the Czech Technical University in Prague.
Over the past 15 years, FIT CTU has achieved many significant achievements in its research and educational activities and has the ambition to continue its growth and to continue to provide the highest quality education and research results. Furthermore, to be actively involved in leading and participating with other institutions and companies on major international research projects and to support students in their achievements in domestic and global competitions, support their work on projects with results applicable in practice and the promotion of science. The faculty plans to continue expanding its study programmes in the future following key IT areas, such as the growing importance of the use of cyber security and artificial intelligence, the massive growth of cloud services, and big data processing.
"I am pleased that CTU's decision to establish an independent Faculty of Information Technology has shown that it understands computer science as a full-value scientific field. The future has shown how right that decision was. Computer science today is characteristic of how widely its methods and results are applicable in other areas and how indispensable it is today," says Prof. Ing. Pavel Tvrdík, CSc., Dean Emeritus of FIT CTU, currently head of the Department of Computer Systems at FIT CTU.
