FIT CTU Celebrates Its 16th Anniversary — The Number 16 Is No Coincidence: It Has Deeper Meaning in the IT World

The Faculty of Information Technology of the Czech Technical University in Prague (FIT CTU) is celebrating its 16th anniversary this year. At first glance, it might seem like a “regular” anniversary, but in the IT world, the number sixteen holds deeper significance. It is closely tied to the foundations of computing — computers operate in a binary system, and the number 16 (2⁴) forms the basis of the hexadecimal system, which is used in color representation, programming, and memory management. In binary, it is represented as 10000 — a symbol of technological progress, which is also the direction the faculty is heading. FIT has been the most sought-after faculty at CTU for several years, with over 3,400 applicants, offering more than 400 courses and 20 bachelor's and master's specializations. It has already educated over 4,700 IT professionals.

“In the digital world, numbers play not only a quantitative role but also a symbolic one. Sixteen represents one of the key building blocks of the digital universe and forms a system that is omnipresent in informatics: from color codes to memory addressing and machine instructions. That’s why we chose to mark the faculty’s 16th anniversary as a symbolic celebration of our professional identity and technological maturity,” said Assoc. Prof. RNDr. Ing. Marcel Jiřina, Ph.D., Dean of FIT CTU.

The faculty currently has six departments, 21 modern laboratories, and 13 research groups, which are conducting 179 research projects. Unique to FIT is its Industry Collaboration Program, involving 53 corporate partners. These partners contribute to teaching, supervise theses, and collaborate on research and innovation projects. The faculty also organizes the COFIT career fair twice a year, and as students progress through their studies, they increasingly engage in practical experience. The result is nearly 100% employment for graduates.

“Sixteen years is a relatively short time in the world of education, but FIT CTU has managed to build a dynamic and innovative environment that attracts thousands of young people interested in information technology every year. This anniversary is not only an opportunity to reflect on the path we’ve taken together but also a moment to consider the future we’re shaping with our colleagues and students. I’m proud that we’ve successfully linked academic education with practical experience and that our graduates find employment both in top-tier companies and in research. I was personally honored to recognize colleagues who have played a fundamental role in the faculty’s development — with FIT Medals and the Dean’s Award for Contributions to the Development of the Faculty — during our ceremonial event on June 5, 2025, at Bethlehem Chapel,” said Dean Marcel Jiřina.

As part of the celebrations, the Dean of the Faculty, Assoc. Prof. RNDr. Ing. Marcel Jiřina, recognized 38 important individuals, including academics, administrative staff, and a group of former students who played a crucial role in establishing the new faculty. Sixteen individuals received the FIT Medal, and twenty-two were awarded the Dean’s Award for Contributions to the Development of the Faculty.
